Style File: What Clothes Can’t You Live Without?

You know the feeling you get when you pull on your favorite pair of jeans (or worn-in boots, or perfect cardigan)? It’s like the whole world could be collapsing around you, but it’d be okay, because those Levi’s are like home; cozy, comfortable and forever stylish.

There are a few pieces in my closet I cannot live without. Trends will pass us by, but true style endures if it’s a piece you absolutely love. These are a few amazing items I will never toss out.

Riding boots. I have a pair of cognac riding boots that are a little too-worn. The buckle is a tinge broken on one side. The toe is fraying from the dozens of times I’ve trotted with them through rain, sleet, hail and snow. And I probably should have gotten rid of them a few years ago, but I never will. I just find that their quirks give them charm.

My first pair of Levi’s. Whenever I am having the worst day EVER, these jeans are the ultimate antidote. And like all the great wonders in life, they just get better with age. They are worn-in-to-perfection skinniest, the first pair that I ever picked out. To this day, they are my go-to piece for a pick-me-up.

Michael Kors bag. I waited forever for my first designer piece, and I picked out a fabulous Michael Kors tote for my sixteenth birthday. Its MK logos combined with winter-white leather detailing make for a bag I will never fail to love while hanging from my arm.

Pearl necklace. Pearls are definitely iconic, so I relish a chance to wear my delicate necklace on special occasions. The beads hang, softly spaced, on a silver strand, and look stunning with an LBD or blouse and wide-leg pant combination. They give an extra dose of sophistication to any ensemble, and every girl could use a little of that, right?

Aviators. I am a sunglasses girl. I love wayfarers. I love oversize shades. I love square frames. But if someone told me tomorrow I could choose only one pair to keep and wear for the rest of my life, I know exactly the ones I would choose. I would hand over my Marc Jacobs, Coach and Halston shades to save my gold-rimmed H&M Aviators. They ooze cool. They make every outfit. I would wear them indoors if I could. They’re just that fabulous.

What pieces in your wardrobe can you not live without? Do they match mine?

Scarves for Women: The Essential Accessory

I have a friend with an absolutely massive scarf obsession.

She has scarves in different patterns and colors, all sorts of fabrics, various lengths and tons of different styles. She wears them all the time, a total addict. I know that sounds ridiculous, but if you are going to be hooked on an accessory, scarves are the perfect extra to add into your style on a continual basis. Why? They are incredibly versatile.

Don’t just use your scarf as a neck-warming instrument. Be innovative. There are so many other ways to wear it. Pick up a few amazing scarves in fun hues, different thicknesses and exciting patterns. Then, have fun with them. Here’s how to wear it.

Around your neck, of course. The classic way is still relevant and forever fashion-forward. It’s cold out there in the fall, so tie a bright scarf around your neck for a little extra coziness and to draw attention to your gorgeous face. You’ll look chic and feel amazing too.

Tied in your hair. My personal favorite way to wear a scarf is tied in my hair. I use silk scarves as headbands for a cute look. Wear the band thick and tie a bow in the back at the nape of the neck. Whether your hair is up, down, braided or gathered in a low bun, you can’t go wrong.

Hooked on your bag. Want to add a dash of color to your basic black bag this winter to spice it up? Tie a scarf on it! I like using patterned scarves for this. My favorite? A thin, black scarf with bright red flowers splattered across the fabric. Made up in a pretty bow, it always looks just right twisted around the handle of my purse.

As a belt. There are some great studded and sparkly scarves on the market this season, and they function wonderfully as waist-cinchers. Tie the thin scarf at the waist like you would a ribbon-belt. It will add a little glinting detail at the smallest part of your frame.

As a shawl-wrap. If you’re scarf is long, thick and oversize (I picked up a black and white one from H&M that fits this description, and I pretty much adore it), then you can use it as a jacket alternative on not-too-cold days. Drape it around your shoulders for an elegant outerwear option. It’s a great piece to take out shopping It’s easy to slide in your purse or wrap around your neck instead of holding onto a coat (a huge annoyance of mine).

Are you rethinking your scarves yet? With this many options, a few great ones are excellent investments this season.
